Get to know the wonderful people who are behind the success of Debs! This month, we interviewed Manami and Aya of our Development department to find out what it's like to work intimately with textiles in all stages.
What do you find most exciting or interesting about working in fabric development?
Manami: Converting textiles is a bit like alchemy, you develop new things with various yarns, you weave, and then finish. It is endless and exciting learning.
Aya: It is important to keep your ears open and process a lot of information in order to bring out the quality of the material through development.
What is most challenging about working in fabric development?
Aya: The challenging part is to create different textures by combining various warp and weft yarns while imagining the final product.
How do you see textile trends changing?
Aya: There's a growing emphasis on sustainable and ethical practices in the textile industry. Developing fabrics that are environmentally friendly and socially responsible can be both meaningful and impactful.
Has working in development changed your fashion sense?Does working with fabric impact how you shop for your own personal clothing?
Manami: Yes, when I purchase my own garments, I check the fabric details and strength of the construction. It may bother shop staff, so sometimes I feel sorry!
How do you stay updated with the latest trends and innovations in fabric technology?
Manami: We keep learning from markets and weavers and factories. We also research trends for shoes, bags, make-up colors and hair colors, as we have to see what's in style as a whole, regardless of gender.
